Vietnamese Tacos
Believe it.
Oh my god, the most delicious food ever! A fried...something...completely beyond recognition, wrapped in rice paper and lettuce. YUM!!!
Ahem...anyway. I told you of our move to An Phu, now I must describe An Phu itself. First and foremost, An Phu is Vietnamese. Phu My Hung was not. It might have been Korean, but it could have been anywhere.
In An Phu, I can walk out the front door and buy a VN taco for 2,000 dong. 16000 is one US dollar. very cheap. AFter buying a taco, I can walk to the BP Compound (the ex-pat hangout) and swim, or I could go to an internet cafe, or I could just bike around. It is fabulous.
Just yesterday I had a distinctly Vietnamese experience. My cell phone had run out of credit, and I had no idea where to purchase more, so I ventured out. I found a young woman in an outdoor restaurant type thing, and attempted to aske her where I could get that done.
How did I do that? Well, using my handful of Vietnamese words and her handful of English and a ton of charades, we worked it out. She tried to sell me a charger, but we established money and she exctiedly pointed me in the right direction, pleased to be of help. Or pleased to be rid of me....haha, I'd like to think pleased to help. That's how most people are here. Just friendly.
Well, I must dash now, as Anne is in a bit of a panic about the new nanny situation. I must train her to watch the children. Haha..eh.

Sin-chow!! Howdy....whatever!! An Phu sounds wayyyy cool! And tacos? who knew???!
I must disagree with one point. Phu My Hung was not exactly Vietnamese, I'll give you that.....But it could NOT have been 'anywhere!' It was distinctly Asian. I think you've been away too long. Trust me, many delightful Asian people.
I'm so glad you were able to make the move to HCMC. Pete and Anne always wrote to us of their love for the city itself. It seems you quickly understood the difference between actually living IN the city vs. the burbs, as it were. A very neat ending experience. Hopefully you'll get more of a taste for city living once you get the new nanny to comprehend the entirety of her job. I'm sure by now you've used your skill and diplomacy to set her straight.
How do you say in Vietnamese: "DO NOT let the babies run into the street?!!" I have total confidence in your abilities!
5 more days, love. Soak up as much as you can of that wonderful place! It is truly magical (apart from the heat) and so ARE YOU!!
Hug numb for me and let her know that we expect her to NOT become a stranger.
Oh, I called this morning....perhaps you were asleep already or the phone was on one of the new house's 7 floors!! At any rate, get more chopsticks. Yes, lots! Chopsticks for everyone. The pretty ones, please!! I was getting kinda good at it and with you doing so much of the cooking (Pho??!! YES)when you get home...yes, YOU...we discussed this, remember?! well, I really do love the authentic Asian stuff. So, chop-chop (pun intended).
love you madly!!!
